Ideally, you will mow the new grass four times before you use Turf Builder with Halts. With fall seeding, that's usually two or three times in the autumn, then once or twice in the spring.

We recommend mowing before the application. After the application, do not mow until the product has been watered in and allowed to dry. People and pets should be kept out of the treated area until the product has been watered in and allowed to dry. The product can used on the lawn around fire pit areas.

Unfortunately, we do not have a spreader setting for the Andersons SR2000 spreader. You can use this rule of thumb to determine your spreader setting: Place enough material in the hopper to cover 1,000 square feet. Place your spreader setting on a low setting. (usually one-fourth of the spreader setting range or less. ) Spread the material over a 50 x 20 foot area (1,000 square feet. ) If material is left over, increase your setting. If you come up short, decrease your setting. While this is not a scientific method, it will put you in the ball park. Keep in mind that it is always better to under fertilize than to over fertilize and risk damage to the lawn.

If you do, you would need to wait until the grass grew and was mowed at least four times. By that point, any crabgrass will be past the point of prevention. If you want to seed and prevent crabgrass, we do make Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer.

This product should be applied before ground temperatures reach 50-55F and crabgrass seeds begin to germinate. This typically coincides sometime between the 1st and 3rd Spring mowing of a cool season lawn.

Question

Shall I reapply Crabgrass Preventer now in mid August?

We lived in this house for 11 years. It was the first time that I noticed severe crabgrass problem last summer after away from the house for two weeks. I put down ferterizer/weed control in the first couple of years and then my husband took over. He could not tell exactly what kind of ferterizer/weed control containing or not he put down and therefore this Spring I was trying to be extra vigilant in applying pre-emergent crabgrass control at the right time. I believed I put them down in early April. I live in Central Jersey. Several weeks ago crabgrass started to show up in the lawn (I assume these are newly emergent crabgrass). I tried baking soda (seen in an organic gardening post) and some chemical weed killers. Both did not do too well. Baking soda powder just made the crabgrass leave darken a bit but did not kill them completely. Chemical did a little bit better but now there are more. I think some of them are probably another wave of newly emergent crabgrass as some of the crabgrass are brown/purple and I think those are the one treated with chemical before. I wonder whether Spring treatment did not work, or shall I apply another batch of Crabgrass Preventer - some posting says one could do two times a year and at least 4 months apart. Suggestions, ideas? I already put down 1/2 bag of leftover Crabgrass Preventor in the area with most problematic area. Some posting said that crabgrass is annual plant, but there seem to be perennial plant as well? How do I tell whether the one I have (a lot) is annual or perennial?

You are right, you can apply Halts Crabgrass Preventer twice a year. The Halts will provide up to 4 month control. Halts will provide protection up to early July if applied in early April . After that crabgrass can start to germinate. There are also crabgrass look a likes that can not be control'd by Halts. You might try taking a sample to a reputable nursery to have it identified.

Turf Builder with Halts may be used on Zoysia grass if it is out of winter dormancy. This product does have a fertilizer and we do not suggest feeding a dormant lawn. You may want to consider using Halts Crabgrass and Grassy Weed Preventer, to prevent crabgrass if your lawn is still dormant.

Question

Is it a good idea to aerate and put down the Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer?

I need to aerate my lawn and kill some weeds that have left brown patches in my yard. Crabgrass is not actively growing in the yard but I want to kill the ones from last year and aerate the lawn as well. It hasn't been aerated for at least 5 years now and was wondering if I could put down the Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer afterwards. Would that really make a difference in my lawn? Thanks

Yes, aeration and applying the Turf Builder with Halts will help your lawn. The crabgrass that you see now is dead. It dies in the fall after the first hard frost. The Turf Builder with Halts creates a barrier that prevents germination, so make sure to aerate before applying the product. If the barrier is broken crabgrass may germinate. http://tinyurl.com/mynvgmt

We suggest keeping the pets off the treated area while you are applying Turf Builder with Halts. Water the product in immediately after the application. Once the product has been watered into the soil and the grass has dried, it will be safe for your pets to reenter. If you are not sure how long it will take for the area to dry, wait 24 hours before allowing your pets to re-enter that area.

We suggest applying Turf Builder with Halts, on cool season grass types, sometime between the first and third spring mowing. Please note that newly seeded areas will have to be mowed 4 times before you may apply. If you were unable to mow the newly seeded area last fall a least 2 times, then you may want to use Scotts Turfbuilder Starter food Plus Weed prevent this spring instead of the Turf Builder with Halts.
